In this extract, Rinpoche explains us the link between 'motivation' and the practise of pure perception. This extract comes from a conference held in Louvain the 29th of march 2007 and entitled "To what does have one to think when one practises Dzogchen? "
When you practice pure perception or when you have the motivation of pure perception, it has the same meaning as from the sutra point of view. When we say we need special motivation that is bodhicitta. The mind of enlightenment is exactly the same. However, what is the difference between bodhicitta, the mind of enlightenment, and the motivation of pure perception? Pure perception is more direct, more profound, and more beneficial than bodhicitta.
When we say ‘the motivation of bodhicitta’ it is with a slightly dualistic mind. When we say ‘the motivation of bodhicitta’, which is to practice bodhicitta for sentient beings, why do we need the motivation of bodhicitta? We need the motivation for sentient beings because sentient beings are suffering and they need help, so we must practice. From this point of view, there are impure beings and pure beings. When we have the motivation of pure perception, there are no impure beings. And if you see all sentient beings as buddhas. and if about all of them you have buddha ideas, you automatically respect all of them.
Ourselves, when we practice pure perception, our mind is automatically equal. It is like we directly destroy our dualistic mind. Therefore, we say the Dzogchen path is the path of the result. That means we practice directly. For example, some Dzogchen practitioners, when they see any kind of sentient being, or any kind of element (fire, earth, water, any kind) they think directly of the essence.
It is quite difficult to have the motivation of pure perception because it is very profound. Normally our mind is involved in a very dualistic way. Our mind is divided into different kinds of ideas. When we see something pure we say ‘Oh, that is pure’. When we see something impure we say, ‘Oh, that is impure’. This means our mind is too dualistic. For someone who clearly understands Dzogchen, as I told you just before, the nature of mind pervades all phenomena, each atom.
For example, we can take dirty water. When we clean it, half becomes dirty and half becomes clean. The clean water also comes from the dirty water. Then afterwards I drink the clean water, it is delicious and it is finished.
However, the other half is dirty so again I clean it.
If I cannot clean it now, it means (implies) that from the beginning I was not able to clean it. But I clean it, so there is a clean, pure part and there is dirty part.
However, again I clean it; clean, clean, clean. In the end everything becomes clean.
Because, if there is there is one atom of the water that I cannot clean, it is like saying that that is permanently dirty, and that cannot be said. It would imply that at the beginning there must be something like permanent dirty. I mean, do you understand ’permanently dirty’ means you can never clean it. That there is something inherently dirty. It is not like this!
When we practice the direct teaching of Dzogchen the thinking is directly to the nature of mind. Having this motivation or ideas is very direct and also it is a very profound movement of the mind and it cleans the mind very quickly. But is very difficult to think it. Why ? Our mind is too much involved into dualistic perception too dualistic.
Even if someone says ‘everything is clean!’. We say ‘No, half is dirty, half is clean !’
When we talk about the Dzogchen point of view, when we say that the motivation is Pure Perception, Pure Idea, and when we practice the Dzogchen, I think pure perception is a very important element. . Like I said in the beginning, mind has a special movement. This movement is like a kind of energy, mind energy, it is like a kind of radiation.
We can ask now, ‘Ok if I practice pure perception how does it benefit sentient beings?’.
It is beneficial. For example, when we practice pure perception correctly, this movement of the mind, this energy is very very profound and sometimes automatically it cleans or helps beings.
And also in the Dzogchen teachings, there is what we call ‘The Three Lineages’. One is the mind lineage which is without words or explanation. When we practice pure perception, this message or radiation is the mind lineage. When someone is practicing pure perception, sentient beings are receiving very special teachings and dedications.
When we practice pure perception, our idea is pure idea, and then nothing is needed; we don’t need any words or expressions because everything is pure. Mind is pure and this radiation, or this kind of energy is pure, and outside everything is pure.
And when we say if someone not pure, all the time is like impure and then we practice too exaggerate, kind of imagine, “Oh I must practice pure but reality is not”. Not like this !
And if someone is thinking that there is some impure, and then practices in a kind of exaggerated way, with a kind of imagination ’Oh I must practice pure perception’ but in reality it is not pure. . It is not like this!
As I said, each phenomena, the mind, outside, inside, everything has the nature of mind. From the point of view of the nature of mind everything is pure.
Therefore I think the important motivation is pure perception. This motivation is, we can say, higher than bodhicitta! Eh, eh. I’m not sure, is it OK ? ah, ah !
